Good reads now part of Amazon

Amazon Buys Goodreads, A Possible Step Toward Getting More Social

What Might Change As A Result Of The Deal

Right now, the Goodreads site makes it relatively easy for users to download or purchase books from Amazon, Barnes & Noble and other sites. It's sort of hard to imagine that Amazon will continue to allow links to non-Amazon stores going forward. Likewise, it's entirely possible that Amazon might begin, let's say, encouraging Goodreads members to sign in using Amazon IDs.
Similarly, it remains unclear whether Amazon will leave the Goodreads site itself largely untouched, or whether Amazon plans over time to assimilate -- OK, "integrate" -- it more closely with its main e-commerce site. We do know that Goodreads will continue to maintain its headquarters in San Francisco, which suggests that -- as with Amazon's Zappos acquisition -- the retailer intends to keep Goodreads as an independent entity.

I have been so dying to see this!!!

I got this blog link Gervais Principle questioned: MacLeod’s hierarchy, the Technocrat, and VC startups via twitter.

It is a lengthy blog but once I started reading it I could not stop... there could be two reasons for it - one being I had landed myself in a really boring/not useful talk at a conference second it was worth reading... I go with the second. I am sure anyone who has worked in corporate world big companies will be able to relate to this.Reading most of the blog gives you a very grim situation maybe not all true (I hope). But feel free to make up your own mind. The last para resonated with me this is what I have been yearning for!!! Definitely worth a read and I like things that end well.

What I hope to see during 2013, and the coming years, is a Flight to Substance. I want the best people– investors, entrepreneurs, engineers– to realize that they’ve been hoodwinked by VC-istan’s shallow reinvention of the corporate system as something different and “cooler”, and to demand a return to Real Technology. I want to see better ideas, better companies, and better cultures. I want to see funding for research and development, so that people can do intellectually interesting work without being thrown into the secondary labor market that academia has become. I want to see a world in which people actually care about solving hard problems and delivering real value. When this happens, the Technocrats can win again.

Thought

I have realized that it is difficult to forgive yourself not just for the things that you have done wrong but also for the things that you have done right.
I have realized how comfortable it is to be with people who are not constantly judging you.
I have realized that no matter how simple a sentence you say if the person you are talking to does not trust you will extrapolate some malicious meaning out of it.
I have realized that it is difficult to deal with inflated egos but even more difficult to keep yourself humble without letting them walk all over you.
I have realized that it is difficult to heal thoes wounds that were given when you are going through tough times it is difficult to
I have realized that if you are always nice to people they take you for granted.
I have realized that some people will stop for you only if they need you.
I have realized that a lot of problems would seize to exist if we want them not to.
I have realized that if you want you can see only good in people.
I have realized that some people always think that they are better than others.

Blank Slate

When was the last time anyone used a SLATE. Remember the black stone, wooden edge, 12" by 12" flat surface and the white chalk and the duster. Yes now you remember, oh the endless scribbling and erasing and those coloured chalks - blue, pink, green. Mine was be used to add 2 n 2 or sometimes to draw random patterns to be converted into mendhi or rangoli in the later years. The slate would vary from the back of the door to the floor to the back of nice wooden bed frame. But how I liked to clean it all - to draw something new or to write that new equation from the algebra class or fix my mistake in theorem proofs. So it is with life. Slate, chalk, duster - life, actions, support system, difference being there is never truly a blank slate in life other then when we are first born. Well some will dispute that too with rebirth parallel universes etc etc. but for now I will start at the blank slate.

Two of my favriotes

Song - Man ke darpan main dekhe hai

Poem -
When things go wrong, as they sometimes will,
When the road you're trudging seems all uphill,
When the funds are low and the debts are high,
And you want to smile, but you have to sigh,
When care is pressing you down a bit,
Rest, if you must, but don't you quit.

Life is queer with its twists and turns,
As every one of us sometimes learns,
And many a failure turns about,
When he might have won had he stuck it out;
Don't give up though the pace seems slow--
You may succeed with another blow.

Often the goal is nearer than,
It seems to a faint and faltering man,
Often the struggler has given up,
When he might have captured the victor's cup,
And he learned too late when the night slipped down,
How close he was to the golden crown.

Success is failure turned inside out--
The silver tint of the clouds of doubt,
And you never can tell how close you are,
It may be near when it seems so far,
So stick to the fight when you're hardest hit--
It's when things seem worst that you must not quit.
